Welcome to The Doctor’s Mentor  LLC – the answer to your questions as you make sense of the disconnect that occurs between the time you commit to professional education (like deciding to go to medical school) and the point in your career where you realize that if you do not make some changes, your own life, relationships and health are at risk of falling apart.

“I remember the first time I realized that not everything I learned in medical school was true,” states Lori Barr, M. D., founder of The Doctors Mentor, LLC. I was in my second year of medical school, studying neuropathology, and we had just learned about Broca’s speech area.  That evening, I called my mother, Nona Lee Barr, Ph. D., a world-renowned speech pathologist who pioneered home health for patients with communication disorders in the 1960s. She laughed when I told her we learned that if you had a stroke in Broca’s area, you could never learn to speak again.  She told me, “Lori, you know how many stroke patients I have treated during my career in New Orleans.  Many had strokes involving Broca’s area, and many, over time, learned to speak again.  Not everything you learn in medical school is true!”

Dr. Lori remains grateful that her mother, Dr. Lee, clued her in early to that and another success principle that escapes most medical and other professionals, strategic mentorship.  Lori moved from naive medical student to owner/partner in one of the most successful imaging practices in North America. Along the way, she benefited from being the protégé of mentors who lived through similar career or life challenges and who made it easier for the protégé who is willing to learn and implement.  Lori founded The Doctors Mentor LLC as a way to help even more doctors and other busy professionals at a time in history when personal mentoring may be harder to attain.  Now that information is available in the palm of your hand, you may not seek out a personal relationship with wise, seasoned leaders in your profession as readily. Yet if you want to have it all in life, you will benefit from the assistance of those who already know the ropes.
